Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was still at college. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury and go through their garbage. After being disappointed in journalism by the tasks she was assigned she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from college. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
